Aims

This one-day workshop provides an introduction to understanding, interpreting and applying basic statistical analysis in a variety of settings such as preparing reports, assessing and developing policy arguments and reinforcing proposals. It is also relevant to those responsible for assessing submissions and who need to be able to check the veracity and consistency of proposals and arguments employing varying levels of data and statistical information.

Key issues for discussion in this workshop include:

  • Statistical thinking
  • Use of statistics in everyday life
  • Averages, median and means
  • Inferential statistics (estimating)
  • Sampling
  • Graphic techniques
  • Correlations
  • Case studies and examples

Methodology

Simple, clear explanations of key statistical techniques are provided and reinforced with numerous practical case studies, examples and exercises with detailed supervision and advice during the day.

This workshop equips participants to:

  • understand basic statistical analysis;
  • appreciate how statistics can be presented in a variety of forms;
  • identify and explain the common misuses of statistics and graphical techniques;
  • better organise and use statistics in presenting policy proposals in reports, briefs and forums; and
  • effectively evaluate the quality of proposals and arguments with statistical components
